The Year 1906

THE YEAR 1906

Some statistics for the Year 1906, a century ago:

The average life expectancy was 47 years.

Only 14 percent of the homes had a bathtub.

Only 8 percent of the homes had a telephone.

There were only 8,000 cars and only 144 miles of paved roads.

The maximum speed limit in most cities was 10 mph.

The tallest structure in the world was the Eiffel Tower!

The average wage was 22 cents per hour.

The average worker made between $200 and $400 per year .

A competent accountant could expect to earn $2000 per year, A dentist $2,500 per year, a veterinarian between $1,500 and $4,000 per year, and a mechanical engineer about $5,000 per year.

More than 95 percent of all births took place at HOME .

Ninety percent of all doctors had NO COLLEGE EDUCATION! Instead, they attended so-called medical schools, many of which were condemned in the press AND the government as "substandard."

Sugar cost four cents a pound.
Eggs were fourteen cents a dozen.
Coffee was fifteen cents a pound.

Most women only washed their hair once a month, and used Borax or egg yolks for shampoo.

Canada passed a law that prohibited poor people from Entering into their country for any reason.

Five leading causes of death were:
1. Pneumonia and influenza
2. Tuberculosis
3. Diarrhea
4. Heart disease
5. Stroke

The American flag had 45 stars.

The population of Las Vegas, Nevada was only 30!!!!

Crossword puzzles, canned beer, and ice tea hadn't been invented yet.

There was no Mother's Day or Father's Day.

Two out of every 10 adults couldn't read or write.

Only 6 percent of all Americans had graduated from high school.

Marijuana, heroin, and morphine were all available over the counter at the local corner drugstores. Back then pharmacists said, "Heroin clears the complexion, gives buoyancy to the mind, regulates the stomach and bowels, and is, in fact, a perfect guardian of health."

Eighteen percent of households had at least one full-time servant or domestic help.

There were about 230 reported murders in the ENTIRE U.S.A. !

Warning: An American teenager is loose in Europe!!!!!!

I got this from my english investigation....we're doing romeo and juliet and if you look closely you'll realize that they are actually mentioned in this....story type thingy :) whatevere I thought it was funny sooooo.....enjoy! :-D

Warning: An American teenager is loose in Europe

The last thing I said to my teenaged son as I put him on the plane for Europe was: ``Don't lose your passport!''
The second-to-the-last thing I said was: ``Don't lose your passport!''
In fact, if you were to analyze all the statements I made to my son in the week before his departure, they'd boil down to: ``Don't lose your passport!''
The message I was trying to convey was that he should not lose his passport. Of course he did not need to be told this. He is a teenaged boy, and teenaged boys already know everything. When a boy reaches 13 years of age, the Knowledge Fairy comes around and inserts into his brain all the information in the entire universe. From that point on, he no longer needs any parental guidance. All he needs is parental money.
This is why a teenaged boy who has had a driver's license for a total of two hours knows that he can drive 367 miles per hour in heavy traffic while devoting 2 percent of his attention to the actual road and 98 percent to the critical task of adjusting the radio to exactly the right volume setting (``Death Star''). If you criticize him, he'll give you a look of contempt mixed with pity, because you are a clueless old dork who was last visited by the Knowledge Fairy in 1873, and your brain has been leaking information ever since.
And so, when I told my son, as he got onto the plane, not to lose his passport, he rolled his eyes in the way that knowledgeable teenagers have rolled their eyes at their parents dating back to when Romeo and Juliet rolled THEIR eyes at THEIR parents for opposing a relationship that turned out really swell except that they wound up fatally stabbing and poisoning themselves.
At this point, you veteran parents are asking: ``So, when did your son lose his passport?'' The answer is: Before he legally got into Europe. He may have set an Olympic record for passport-losing, because apparently his was stolen, along with all his traveler's checks, while he was on the plane. Don't ask me how this could happen. My son has tried to explain it to me, but I still don't understand, because I have a leaky old brain.
All I know is that when the plane landed, my son had no passport and almost no money. Fortunately, the plane landed in Germany, a carefree, laid-back nation that is not a big stickler for paperwork.
Ha ha! I am of course kidding. The national sport of Germany is stickling. So my son spent a number of hours trying to convince various authorities that he was a legal human. Meanwhile, back in the United States, unaware of what had happened, I was exchanging increasingly frantic telephone calls with the mother of the boy my son was supposed to meet in the Frankfurt airport, who had reported back to her that my son had not arrived. The mother had suggested several things that her son could do, such as have my son paged or ask an authority, but of course her son scoffed at these ideas, because he is also a teenaged boy, and thus did not need to be told how to find somebody in a large, unfamiliar foreign airport. He preferred the time-tested technique of wandering around aimlessly. His mother, who also has a daughter, assured me that girls do not act this way.
Eight fun-filled and relaxing hours after his plane landed, my son finally called me, and I nearly bit my tongue off not telling him I Told You So. He told me that the Germans had graciously agreed not to send him back to Miami, which is good, because he would probably have ended up in Kuala Lumpur.
He got a new passport the next day, but replacing the traveler's checks was not so simple. I will not name the brand of traveler's checks involved, except to say that it rhymes with ``Wisa.'' As I write these words, my son and I have both been calling the Wisa people for a week, and they still haven't given us a Final Answer on whether they'll replace the checks. It says on the Wisa website that you can ``easily get a refund if your cheques are lost or stolen,'' but in my son's case it apparently is going to require a vote of the full United Nations. For security and convenience, my son would have been better off carrying his money in the form of live cattle.
But never mind that. The main thing is, he's safely and legally in Europe, where he and his friend will be backpacking around for a month, relying on their common sense. So if there's a war, you'll know why.

The Rodeo

Hey ya'll,
I meant to post this last night but (I know it may sound like I'm making exscuses bcs I am...in a way..:)but we ended up going to a movie called Cars right after dinner and it was 10pm by the time we got back. And then Sarah got first dibs on the comp bcs she needed it for school....

The rodeo was on June 3rd and we had lots of fun.(like duh) haha
lol, k the bronc riding was first



and there was bull riding



calf roping



Oh yes and inbetween some of the acts this guy (who was kinda oldish) came out with his trained horse and they did tricks together. They did rope tricks and some other tricks. his name was something starting wioth docter....lol



And of course the clown rodeo!!!! ooops! I mean the rodeo clown! :P



It was tons of fun at the Dodge Rodeo in Erin and this shift key is getting very VERY annoying bcs it keeps on sticking!!!!!
OH AND YOU ALL MISSED OUT ON AN AWSOME RODEO!!!!
AARGH!! THERE GOES THE SHIFT KEY AGAIN!!! :P

Victoria Day

Hey Ya'll! I finally FINALLY!!!! have a new post!!!!lol
Well This post is just to ask you what you did for Victorias Day. My Family went the Koerssons (sp?) and played an awsome game of hockey (girls against guys) where the girls creamed the guys even though the score was like 8 - 3 for the guys ;P lol and it ended up not really being a girls team considering at one point I was the only girl on the girls team untill Ashley B. came back to help me. lol, Mind you the adults, and some other guys were on our team so don't go thinking I was the only one on our team :D hehehehe A lot of the people from our homescholling group and some others were there too. We had a cook-out, some personnel fireworks, and then we went to see the big show of fireworks by the areana in Nobleton. It was tons of fun except knowing I had to wake up at 6am the next morning :( well, lol, I'm done typin now :D

food!

Hey guys an' girls I brought these brownies for my youth group and they turned out to be a great success so I though some of you girls (I don't know if any of you guys bake) might like to try making them. They're one of my fav goodies.

Butterscotch Brownies

1/4 c butter
1 c packed brown sugar
1 egg
3/4 c flour
1 tsp baking pwdr
1/2 tsp salt
1/2 tsp vanilla

1) Heat oven to 350 degrees
2) melt butter over low heat or just use oil
3) add sugatr to oil/melted butter
4)cool (if you melted the butter)
5)stir in egg
6) stir in flour, baking powder, and salt. Blend in.
7) Mix in vanilla
8) Spread in well greased square pan
9) bake for 25 min (don't over bake)
10) cout into squares while warm

you can add 1/2 cup nuts if you like.
